WE BELIEVE 2015

We believe that each member of the camp community should feel accepted and respected for who they are. We believe that the camp environment should provide opportunity for achievement in a wide variety of skills and challenges, as well as for personal growth and development, including sound health and nutritional practices. We believe that both citizenship within the community and personal friendships should be valued. Above all, a camper should have fun and enjoy camp life to the fullest.

At Alford Lake Camp our goals are achieved through a nationally and globally diverse community, through simple outdoor living, through a varied program of activities, and through the leadership of enthusiastic and qualified counselors. With approximately one counselor to every three campers, each camper has the opportunity to receive individual attention and instruction as well as guidance and encouragement when meeting new experiences and challenges.

Each year we ask ourselves: Have we really challenged campers and staff? Have we encouraged new skills and interests? Have we heightened a sense of wonder? Have we enhanced sensitivity to the simple things in the natural world which are close at hand and of great importance? Have we helped to nurture courage to confront oneself to seek improvement? And we ask: Has the camp experience at ALC, while giving campers fun and adventure in a healthy and safe environment, been truly effective and viable as an educational tool? Our humble yet resounding answer is, YES!

We believe that long-term camping can help achieve successes more effectively than any other educational experience. From the experience of living in the supportive environment of camp, campers often learn that they can be successfully independent from their home and from their families and yet consistently connected to them. Campers may realize more about their personal strengths; discover that they can greet new challenges with confidence; adjust more easily to unexpected changes. However, we strongly believe that the long-term benefits of a camp experience will be proportionate to the length of time a camper spends in camp.

At Alford Lake Camp, we believe that by living in small tent groups in a supportive community, personal family values can be reinforced as life skills continue to be practiced. A quality camp, with a high performance record in leadership and program, can play a major role in personal growth and increased self-confidence. A successful resident camp experience can prepare a child to adjust more quickly and smoothly to a school, college, profession or whatever experience is next for each of our campers and staff. A camper might discover new interests as well as gain acceptance of new ideas, becoming more respectful of differences among others. At Alford Lake Camp, we hope to achieve these goals, at least to some degree, for each member of the camp community.

We, the directors, believe that a successful camp experience for today’s youth can positively affect their future leadership in our “global community”. We believe that when our campers return to their families and communities they will be more self-confident, more resilient and better prepared to make responsible choices in their daily lives. Our hope is for our campers to leave Alford Lake Camp with a greater understanding of what it is to be a responsible citizen; with an increased ability to navigate life’s challenges; with a greater ability and desire to reach out to others to “make a difference” and with the enthusiasm to want to help create a happier and healthier world!
