MARNIE THOMPSON MILLER
I chose ALC because I went to ALC as a camper, JR CT and as a counselor. Many of my favorite memories happened on that lake and in those pines! I was thrilled we had three daughters to send to ALC so they, too, could make memories and I’m beyond grateful to have this special camp bond with my own daughters.
What makes ALC special ?
Do you have all day for this one?! In short, ALC is set right on Alford Lake and surrounded by hundreds of beautiful acres. While time marches on, certain core values have been preserved and maintained by the amazing leaders of this camp: Sue, Mrs. M and Betsy. With their leadership, my daughters have gained friendship, grit, risk taking, honesty, and independence. Where else can a bunch of girls live away from home with limited electricity, no electronics ( be unplugged!!!), while wearing a uniform and living in canvas tents?! Simply put , there are only a few places left where girls can live with the bare minimum, have a blast, not be judged, but be constantly embraced for who they are as a person.
What I like most as a parent is the "sisterhood" my girls experience after a session at ALC. They form life-long friendships with girls of all ages from all over the world. To have such relationships outside of their hometown means the world to me as a parent. These friendships make the world a smaller and more tangible, peaceful place.
What my girls love most about ALC: being friends with girls of all ages and backgrounds, being able to experience so many amazing activities AND being able to choose which activities to partake in, and learning so many wonderful songs.
My girls are much more global, incredibly independent, and more well-rounded people after their summer in Hope, Maine!
