KARN

Each summer is always exciting and different. I select the horses in May and along with my staff, school and train them in preparation for the campers to begin riding. We are always trying new things at riding: barn overnights, trail rides, cross country jumping course, dawn breakfast rides, barn ‘fun days’, decorate a horse and gymkhana games. I have added stable-management to the program as I noticed that some campers do not choose to ride but love to spend time at the barn, just caring for the horses and helping out.

As an international counselor, I feel fortunate that I’ve been able to return for so many summers. As a Bungalow Counselor, I am challenged each summer to grow, learn and be a better person. Helping out and guiding counselors and campers, I am a listening ear, an encourager, a motivator, a resource and a support to whomever may need it.

I honestly believe that this desire to help others, to make a change no matter how small, would never have happened if not for the teaching and patience shown to me at ALC. I owe a huge debt to Jean and Susie and all those counselors and campers who gave me the strength and courage to help me to take a look at myself and make those all-important changes.

My favorite places in camp other than the barn: I love the peaceful setting of Sunday in the Pines, I adore the Library with its big windows and fireplace, but my favorite place is the Camphouse where the campers and staff perform and we all get to be silly, cheer and laugh together.

I am very thankful for my summers at ALC and for how the community has helped shape me into the person I am today.
